STEELTON -- Steel-High's Malia Tate-DeFreitas is already thinking about one of her next missions -- playing basketball at Hampton University.

Tate-DeFreitas, the reigning Class A state player of the year, signed her national letter-of-intent on Wednesday, joining a program that's won the last three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament championships and the last two regular-season conference titles.

"Hampton is a good winning program and I wanted to continue that (tradition of winning basketball), coming from Steel-High, where we are used to winning," said Tate-DeFreitas, who has led the Rollers to back-to-back state championships.

"I thought Hampton was the school to go (to)."

Tate-DeFreitas' mother Jennifer is a graduate of Hampton, as well.

Malia Tate-DeFreitas will begin her senior season just 51 points away from the school's all-time scoring record. She has 2358 points; Rod Brookin, her cousin, scored 2409 during his high school career in the mid-1980s.
