LIMERICK, Pa. - York's Evan Johnson rallied to win the recent International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Boys U-14 division at the 2012 IJGT Philly Junior at Turtle Creek Golf Course.
Johnson's final round 73 (+1) was just enough to put him in a two-way tie for the Boys U-14 title with Media, Pa. native Griff Colvin. It took two extra holes in the sudden-death playoff between Johnson and Colvin to name the Philly Junior champion.
After both juniors pared the first hole, Johnson captured the victory with an eight-foot birdie on the par-5 second. Brett Insera from Upper Saddle River, N.J. finished in third place with rounds of 76-80.
Over seventy-five of the top junior golfers in the northeast fought through windy conditions on Sept. 22-23 for what turned out to be the tightest battle of the season in the nationally-ranked junior event.
Johnson found himself sitting a sizeable eight strokes back after his opening round 82 (+10); chasing Colvin after he posted his two-over 74 on Saturday.
Johnson saw that eight-stroke margin as nothing more than the next obstacle he was about to tackle, as he fought through the chilly temperatures in the early morning tee-times at Turtle Creek on Sunday.
