Changes proposed to I-83/581, designed to ease traffic congestion

"We're going to add some extra lanes, because right now when you get on right here it's a very short ramp, so this is going to bring an extra lane the whole way up and what it'll do is give us two lanes of 83 merging up," said Fritzi Schreffler, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesperson, as she showed a map of the I-83/581 road construction project to a group of people at Cedar Cliff High Wednesday night. 

Schreffler says the changes will ease heavy traffic congestion.
The most significant improvements include: widening I-83 North and South, between Route 581 and exit 40-B for New Cumberland. Construction of a second lane of I-83 North at Route 581.

A longer lane for Route 581, East traffic  to I-83 South at exit 6-B and changing up ramps from I-83 to Lemoyne and Highland Park.

As part of the ramp reconfiguration, two existing off ramps: I-83 north at exit 41-B for Highland Park and I-83 North at exit 42 for Lemoyne and the ramp at 41 will be closed and a new I-83 off ramp to Lowther Street will be built.
After taking it all in at a meeting at Cedar Cliff High School Wednesday night, some people had mixed reviews.

"Should have done it in 1960 when they built the road, it was the stupidest building of a road they ever did," Bob Farver, Lemoyne resident.

"It's been a long time, they've needed it. I don't think it's going to do a lot to solve the bottleneck and traffic," said Tom McCurdy, Lemoyne resident.
