HARRISBURG -- Southbound Interstate 83 will be closed in the York area tonight starting at around 11 p.m. in the vicinity of the bridge that crosses over Route 30 at I-83 Exit 21 (Arsenal Boulevard) in York County.

Southbound traffic during the overnight hours will be detoured by directing southbound traffic off of the interstate at Exit 22 (North George Street/Route 181), then south on North George Street (Route 181) to the intersection with Route 30. The closure should be removed and traffic restored to southbound I-83 by 5 a.m. tomorrow morning, Thursday, Sept.  19.

The closure is necessary as part of the construction project to rehabilitate the I-83 bridge over Route 30 in this area. The contractor is currently conducting an operation to raise bridge beams by a fraction of an inch so that the bearings under each beam can be removed and replaced. The bearings help support the bridge beams.

In addition to tonight, overnight southbound closures are also scheduled for next Monday and Thursday nights, Sept. 23 and 26, weather permitting.
PennDOT began rehabilitation work on the I-83 bridge over Route 30 in mid-July with the contractor G.A. & F.C. Wagman, Inc. of York, Pennsylvania, for $2,272,448.

Repairs to the 54-year-old bridge are necessary in order to maintain the serviceability of this structure until funds are available for more extensive work. The work includes deck patching, expansion joint replacement, backwall replacement and bearing replacement. The project is to be completed by the end of this year.
