HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- A lawyer for Pennsylvania state Sen. Leanna Washington says the charges filed against her by state prosecutors are "thin and specious."

Washington was scheduled to turn herself in Wednesday at 3 p.m. at a Montgomery County district justice's office.

Washington is accused of illegally using her office for political and financial gain.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane says the Philadelphia Democrat pressured her staff into organizing an annual political fundraiser on taxpayer time, using taxpayer resources.

But Washington's lawyer, Henry Hockeimer, says the facts don't amount to criminal conduct.

The 68-year-old Washington was elected to the Senate in 2005 and is running for a third full term. She also spent 12 years in the state House.

The investigation became public after agents searched Washington's Philadelphia and Montgomery County offices in October.Pa. AG accuses lawmaker for using office for gain
