PennDOT crews to fix sinkholes on Route 30 near Hellam

HELLAM -- Drivers can expect delays traveling west on Route 30 through York County Tuesday.  PennDOT maintenance crews will be patching the area around sinkholes near the Shoe House Road overpass.

The westbound right lane of Route 30 west of Hellam will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until around 2 p.m. The left lane will remain open. PennDOT anticipates both lanes will be back open to traffic by mid-afternoon.

The sinkholes were discovered in August. Both were about 15 feet wide and 10 to 12 feet deep, impacting the right lanes. They were repaired at the time, but the patching maintenance will be another step in the full repairs.

Robert Gallagher was driving on Route 30 Monday. "If they (drivers) are not sitting there too long, they'll be patient, he says. "But if they are going to sit more than 10 minutes than I'm not sure they'll remain patient."

When asked about the threat of sinkholes, Gallagher told CBS 21 it's just another reason drivers need to always be aware. "It would be scary, I guess you try not to think about it too much. Where I live crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge...there were two accidents in two weeks with people going off the bridge," he said.

PennDOT released a statement saying, "Motorists are asked to be alert to this patching operation and to slow down when approaching and traveling through the work zone, for their safety as well as for the safety of the maintenance crews."
