HARRISBURG – Police in Philadelphia are looking for a man accused of having sex with a minor.

That man is Susquehanna Township High School assistant principal Shawn Sharkey. According to a police affidavit, 45-year-old Sharkey has sexual interactions with a high school student, who was 16 at the time, back in February and March.

Police only recently got a tip about the crime, and, after speaking with the student, have filed charges.

Friday night in Susquehanna Township, parents were aghast at the allegations.

“That’s just crazy to me. I just can’t believe that even happened,” Jennifer Wilkerson, whose son is a freshman, said.

According to the affidavit, the student told police that Sharkey would pick her up near her apartment around 10 p.m. and take her to the Red Roof Inn in Susquehanna Township.

The student also said, “during their time together, he would perform oral sex on her, she would perform oral sex on him, and they would engage in vaginal sex,” according to the affidavit.

The affidavit also quotes her as saying this happened at least 10 different times. Also in the affidavit, police say Sharkey denied the charges and said there was no truth to the allegations.

“He stated that he may have ‘side-hugged’ her, but that he never had any other type of physical or inappropriate contact,” the affidavit said.

Sharkey is being charged with sexual contact with a student, corruption of minors, and unlawful contact with a minor.

Susquehanna Township School District released a statement saying, in part, “On behalf of board members, educators, and students, we are sickened and saddened by this news, and are very concerned about those involved in this difficult situation.”

The district says it believes that none of the alleged acts happened on school property or during school hours.

At Friday night’s football game against Palmyra, parents of children who go to Susquehanna Township say they were disgusted when they heard the news.

“If these allegations are proven true, it is yet another sad thing for Susquehanna Township School District. What a shame,” Roberta Silver, a parent, said.

“Actions need to be taken. It definitely needs to happen. That’s the bottom line,” Wilkerson added.

The school district says that Sharkey has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the completion of this investigation.

At this point, Sharkey has been charged but not arrested. Police in the Philadelphia area where he lives say they are aware of the situation.
