Updated: Sunday, September 29 2013, 10:18 PM CDT
ASHVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say an estranged daughter killed her mother with a sawed-off shotgun before her father killed her in self-defense, not realizing she was the daughter he hadn't seen in years.
Officials say Josephine and Jeffrey Ruckinger burst into the home Friday night and killed her mother and brother before the family patriarch opened fire himself, killing the assailants.
Authorities on Sunday said Josephine Ruckinger killed her mother, Roberta Frew, while her husband apparently killed John Frew Jr.
Cambria County District Attorney Kelly Callihan says investigators believe Josephine Ruckinger's father, John Frew, then killed her and her husband.
The attack happened at the Frew home in Ashville, a rural community about 40 miles southwest of State College.
A relative said Josephine Ruckinger had a long-standing feud with her family.

Investigators said the father found his wife and son fatally shot, then in turn shot the two intruders. The father, identified by Cruse as John Frew, was not injured.
Cruse identified the victims as her 64-year-old sister Roberta Frew and the couple's 47-year-old son. She identified the assailants as Frew's daughter, Josephine, and her husband, Jeff Ruckinger.

Cody Williams, a communications operator at the state police barracks in Ebensburg, confirmed Saturday that a homeowner in Ashville killed two intruders after the man says they shot and killed his wife and adult son Friday night.
Police say the man's daughter was one of the slain intruders, but her relationship to the other intruder remained unclear Saturday, as did the motive for the shootings.
The man, who was not injured, reported the shootings to the police. State police say the investigation is continuing and autopsies on victims were being performed.
Investigators have scheduled a Sunday news conference on the case.
