Contractors putting members of the military in Afghanistan at risk

A report by the Pentagon found civilian contractors put the lives of troops serving in Afghanistan at risk.

The Pentagon's internal watchdog says the Air Force's poor management of construction projects compromised safety for military personnel.

Contractors were paid nearly 40 million dollars for construction and electrical work at Camps Leatherneck and Bastion.

The report found serious mistakes such as buildings with no sprinkler systems and too few fire escapes.

The Washington Guardian's Phillip Swarts says military leaders relied too much on the technical expertise of contractors.

"Investigators found they really didn't oversee the contractors performing the tasks at all,” Swarts explained. “In fact, Air Force officers relied on the contractors to judge when the projects were completed and how well they were completed."

The Inspector General says the Air Force did not respond to the report, which is unusual for government agencies.
