Lie or Legit, we set out to answer a viewer question that came via email.
It reads as follows:
Have truck weigh stations on PA roads been closed for good? The only ones I have ever seen open are temporarily safety checks at where weigh stations used to be?
-- Mike Daley, CBS 21 News Viewer
Well, Mike... We took your question directly to PennDOT, asking
"Lie or Legit, have the roadside weigh scales been closed?"And within a few hours, we had the answer we were looking for... (And Mike wasn't totally crazy!)
But,
it's a LIE.According to PennDOT Spokesperson Mike Crochunis, a number of weigh scales across the state have actually closed in recent years, and several more are set to close temporarily for repairs in 2010.
Crochunis' entire email repsonse is as follows:
In January 2005, responsibility for truck-weight enforcement was transferred from PennDOT to Pennsylvania State Police. Under an agreement with state police, PennDOT continues to maintain 25 truck-weight facilities, eight of which are scheduled to be refurbished in 2010, at which times customers may find them temporarily closed for enhancements. Of the original 29 truck weigh-in-motion facilities PennDOT had installed, four were retired due to redundant operations in the area. This was done in consultation with state police.
- Mike Crochunis, PennDOT
So, to our viewer Mike, we say this... You might very well have seen one of the weigh scales that have been "retired," and expect to see even more, at least temporarily in 2010.
Lie or Legit can be seen every Tuesday on CBS 21 News at 10 on the CW15. To submit a topic for consideration, email mikeparker@cbs21.com
