Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Coming into the season with major question marks at the quarterback position, Kevin Kolb has led the Arizona Cardinals to their first 4-0 start in 38 years.
Kolb threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-tying 15- yard score to Andre Roberts on fourth down with 22 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and Jay Feely nailed a game-winning 46-yard field goal in overtime as the Cardinals downed the Miami Dolphins, 24-21, on Sunday.
"We've seen so many miracles happen in this stadium that we just don't ever give up hope," Kolb said of the come-from-behind victory.
Battered and bruised for most of the day, Kolb completed 29-of-48 passes with two interceptions, while Roberts hauled in six balls for 118 yards and two scores for Arizona (4-0), which is off to its best start since the St. Louis Cardinals began the year 7-0 in 1974.
Larry Fitzgerald added eight receptions for 64 yards and a score in the victory.
Ryan Tannehill threw for a franchise rookie-record 431 yards on 26-of-41 efficiency, while Brian Hartline had a touchdown and a franchise-record 253 yards receiving on 12 catches for the Dolphins (1-3), who suffered their second consecutive overtime defeat. They fell to the New York Jets last Sunday.
"We had our opportunities in the game," Tannehill said. "I think we had a great week of preparation. We made some big plays in the game, just have to find a way to win at the end"
Cameron Wake, who hadn't tallied a sack over his first three games, registered a career-high 4 1/2 of Miami's franchise-record eight. Sean Smith intercepted two passes in the setback.
Reggie Bush, listed as questionable after he sustained a knee injury during the Jets game, carried the ball 17 times for 67 yards.
After Roberts' 46-yard touchdown catch gave the Cardinals their first lead of the contest with 9:45 to go in the fourth quarter, Arizona appeared on its way to another score.
On the fourth play of Miami's ensuing series, Tannehill found Legedu Naanee for a 19-yard completion. But as Naanee tucked the ball away, he lost the handle of it as it fell harmlessly to the ground. Patrick Peterson picked up the loose ball and returned it down to the Miami 3-yard line for a 60-yard runback.
Two plays later, however, Kolb's pass intended for Fitzgerald in the front right corner of the end zone was intercepted by Smith, who made a fantastic diving catch while managing to keep both of his toes inbounds.
Just one snap later on a deep play-action pass, a wide-open Hartline ran across the formation and hauled in an 80-yard score along the left sideline. Jorvorskie Lane caught the two-point conversion for a 21-14 Miami advantage with 7:05 left in regulation.
Following a pair of three-and-outs, Arizona regained possession at its own 49- yard line with 2:51 left. Roberts had a 16-yard catch on a 3rd-and-18 and then moved the chains with a 9-yard reception on 4th-and-2.
With the ball at the Miami 15-yard line with 42 ticks to play, three straight Kolb incompletions set up a 4th-and-10. With plenty of time to throw, Kolb threw a strike to Roberts in the front left corner of the end zone to send the game into an extra session.
After the Cardinals went three-and-out on their first march of overtime, Miami turned it over on its fifth offensive play.
Paris Lenon hit Tannehill as he threw, and his wobbler landed right into the waiting arms of Kerry Rhodes at the Miami 47-yard line.
Kolb found Early Doucet underneath on 3rd-and-8 for a 10-yard pickup, and Feely nailed a 46-yard field goal four plays later for the win.
After both teams were unable to crack the scoreboard in the first quarter, Miami's Dan Carpenter booted through a 32-yard field goal before a Lane 1-yard touchdown plunge on 4th-and-goal made it 10-0 with 1:56 to go in the opening half.
Smith intercepted Kolb's pass intended for Fitzgerald on the Cardinals' ensuing series and returned it 31 yards to the Arizona 34-yard line. The pick led to a 27-yard Carpenter field goal and a 13-point Miami halftime cushion.
Kolb led the Cardinals down the field for a score on their opening possession of the second half. He was 5-of-8 for 56 yards on the 8-play, 59-yard march before finding Fitzgerald for a 3-yard touchdown which cut the deficit to 13-7.Game Notes
